For one hundred years, FIDE has stood at the heart of the global chess scene – standardizing regulations and titles, organizing tournaments and matches, and promoting and protecting the game's integrity.
Regardless of FIDE’s leadership, the goal has always been the same – to celebrate the beauty of chess and give it the global prominence it deserves. As we celebrate the first centenary of the International Chess Federation, we aim to provide both the chess audience and the general public with a concise summary of FIDE’s history, from its formation in 1924 in Paris to today.

The book before you is the result of that effort. It features images, many rarely seen before, along with details of events, organizers, players, arbiters, and key dates in the modern history of chess, all meticulously compiled by Willy Iclicki and Dmitry Oleynikov.

As you go through the pages, remember that behind every story or event described in this book are thousands of hours of work, on and off the chessboard, by enthusiasts from different eras, cultures, and backgrounds, all united by their love of chess. The chess world is deeply indebted to all of these people who have enriched the beauty and history of our game and elevated chess to new heights of global appreciation and respect.
